Shiplake 1863 Dutton, Allen & Co Directory listing

SHIPLAKE is a very extensive parish, pleasantly situate about midway between Henley-on-Thames and Reading, being 4 miles distant from each of those towns. There is a station near the village, at Lashbrook, on the branch line of the Great Western Railway, running from Twyford to Henley-on-Thames. The village is seated on an eminence, from whence extensive and picturesque views of the woodlands of Berkshire may be obtained. The Church is a pretty structure of flint, and in good repair. The benefice is a vicarage, in the gift of the Crown and the Dean and Canons of Windsor, alternately, and of the annual value of 160. The present vicar is the Rev. Vernon Blake. Here is a school for children, conducted on the National system. Population in 1861, 621.
